Ridwan Akanbi and Bisola Asaju shine at Alabi Memorial Table Tennis Tournament finale

The newly built Idera Multi-Purpose Hall in Otan Ayegbaju, Osun State, came alive during the grand finale of the 6th Michael and Felicia Alabi Memorial Table Tennis Tournament, as Ridwan Akanbi and Bisola Asaju emerged champions in commanding fashion.

Over five days, more than 200 players from across Nigeria competed fiercely for supremacy and a share of the ₦5 million prize pool—an increase from last year’s ₦3.5 million—highlighting the tournament’s growing prestige on the national calendar.

Akanbi’s road to the men’s singles title was marked by determination and skill. He dethroned defending champion Abdulbasit Abdulfatai in the semifinal before defeating Wasiu Azeez 4–2 in the final. In the women’s singles, Asaju delivered a standout performance, overcoming Favour Ojo 4–2 to secure the crown. Her victory followed the early exit of reigning champion Hope Udoaka in the round of 16, signaling a shift in the competitive landscape.

The junior events added excitement to the tournament. Chinenye Okafor dominated the girls’ U-15 final with a 3–0 win over debutant Deborah Festus, whose impressive run to the final earned widespread praise. In the boys’ U-15 category, Umar Ayoola showcased his class with a decisive 3–0 victory over Abdulateef Abdulsalam.

At the closing ceremony, Nigeria Olympic Committee Secretary General Tunde Popoola commended the efforts of Ayodeji Alabi, chairman of the Osun State Table Tennis Association, for sustaining and growing the competition. He encouraged participants to use the platform as a stepping stone toward national team selection.

The event also honored veteran umpire John Peters, Nigeria’s oldest international official, who recently turned 80. His continued presence at major tournaments was celebrated as a symbol of dedication and lifelong commitment to the sport.
