D'Tigress get tricky World Cup draw
African champions Nigeria’s D’Tigress now know the size of the task ahead as they prepare for a long-awaited return to the global stage, having been drawn in a competitive Group B at the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup 2026.
The draw, conducted in Berlin on April 21, sets up intriguing matchups for the tournament scheduled to run from September 4 to 13 in the German capital. Standing between Nigeria and a place in the knockout rounds are European powerhouse France, the ever-disciplined Hungary, and the fast-paced Korea Republic.
For D’Tigress, this marks their third appearance at the World Cup, a journey that has steadily evolved over the years. After finishing 16th on their debut in 2006, the team stunned the basketball world in 2018 with a historic run to the quarter-finals, eventually placing eighth still their finest outing on this stage.
Their return, however, carries added weight. Nigeria missed the 2022 edition in Sydney despite earning qualification, following a government-imposed suspension that sidelined all national basketball teams from international competition. In their absence, Mali stepped in as replacement, making this comeback feel both overdue and deeply symbolic.
Now back where they belong, the challenge is immediate and unforgiving.
France, with their rich pedigree and consistent presence among the elite, headline the group as clear favourites. Hungary’s structured, tactical discipline offers a different kind of test, while Korea Republic’s high-tempo, energetic style ensures there will be no easy nights.
Interestingly, D’Tigress are stepping into relatively unfamiliar territory. They have never faced any of their Group B opponents at the World Cup. However, there is some recent history to draw from Nigeria clashed with France at the Paris 2024 Olympics, while previous meetings with Korea Republic have come during FIBA qualifying tournaments. Hungary, meanwhile, represents a completely new challenge on the major stage.
Across the draw, hosts Germany lead Group A alongside Spain, Japan, and Mali. Group C features Belgium, Australia, Puerto Rico, and Turkey, while reigning champions USA headline Group D, drawn against Czech Republic, Italy, and China.
With the groups now set, attention turns firmly to preparation. D’Tigress are already in camp and gearing up for a series of WNBA friendlies, crucial steps in fine-tuning a squad determined not just to compete but to announce their return with authority.
