State Government dissolves Rivers Angels management
The Rivers State Government has announced the immediate dissolution of the management, technical crew, and staff of Rivers Angels Football Club following what it described as the team's poor performance and lack of seriousness over the last two seasons.
The decision was communicated in a dissolution notice dated Monday, June 29, 2026, and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports, Emmanuel Ndah. Addressed to head coach Tosan Blankson, the letter officially brings an end to his two-year tenure with the seven-time Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) champions.
The ministry also invited anyone interested in continuing with the club to submit fresh applications for consideration, signalling a complete restructuring of the club's operations.
The sweeping decision comes on the back of a disappointing 2025/26 campaign for Rivers Angels. Despite hosting the NWFL Super Six in Port Harcourt, the Jewel of Rivers finished at the foot of the table, recording just one victory and ending level on points with fellow strugglers FC Robo Queens.
Their difficult season was further compounded by a quarter-final exit in the 2026 Women's President Federation Cup, where they were knocked out by FC Robo Queens.
Once regarded as the dominant force in Nigerian women's football, Rivers Angels have now gone five seasons without winning the league title, with their last NWFL crown coming in the 2020/21 campaign.
While the club struggled to reclaim its former dominance, Blankson's spell was not without success. During his two years in charge, he led Rivers Angels to consecutive Rivers State FA Cup titles, lifted the President Federation Cup, and secured back-to-back qualifications for the NWFL Super Six.
In the dissolution notice, the Rivers State Government also expressed gratitude to the outgoing coach, thanking him for his contributions and service to the club during his time in charge.
