Turkey trip masks brewing shake up in Super Eagles backroom staff

As the Super Eagles prepare to depart for Turkey ahead of their international friendlies against Iran and Jordan, stability within the coaching crew appears

more temporary than assured.

Local assistant coaches Daniel Ogunmodede and Fidelis Ilechukwu will remain part of the technical team for now and are expected to travel with the squad Monday night.

However, their continued presence is increasingly viewed as provisional amid growing concerns within the Nigeria Football Federation.

Sources indicate that the NFF technical committee is actively reassessing the composition of the Super Eagles’ backroom staff, particularly the need for more experienced Nigerian assistants to complement head coach Eric Chelle and his preferred aides.

A top official, speaking on the situation, raised doubts about the readiness of the current assistants to step into the top role if required. “Neither of these assistant coaches can step in to lead the Super Eagles should such an opportunity arise, and that is why the need to look at better qualified coaches on the home front,” the official stated.

The review process is expected to intensify soon, with plans underway for the technical committee to meet with Chelle and determine the most suitable local additions to his coaching setup.

Ogunmodede’s profile received a boost after he secured a UEFA B coaching licence in Scotland and guided Remo Stars to a historic NPFL title last season. But that success has since been overshadowed by the club’s struggles this campaign, which led to the appointment of Usman Abdallah as head coach.

In contrast, Ilechukwu has maintained a stronger footing domestically, currently leading Enugu Rangers in a competitive title push, reinforcing his reputation within the local league.

Despite their inclusion for the Turkey trip, the duo’s long-term future with the national team hangs in the balance as the federation weighs experience against continuity in its technical direction.
