Super Falcons to face Comoros in Los Angeles 2028 Olympics Qualifiers
African champions Nigeria will begin their quest for a place at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games with a second-round qualifying tie against Comoros.
The Super Falcons, who received a bye into the second round of the African qualifiers, learned their opponents after Comoros produced one of the most remarkable results in the competition’s history, demolishing Sudan 30-0 on aggregate to advance.
Comoros announced themselves in emphatic fashion with a stunning 17-0 victory in Morocco on 4 June, a result that stands as the biggest win in the nation’s history. Forward Holoua Ahamada was the star of the show, scoring four goals in the one-sided encounter.
The Coelacanths were far from finished. Four days later, they completed the job with another dominant performance, thrashing Sudan 13-0 to seal progression and book a date with Africa’s most successful women’s national team.
Nigeria, alongside South Africa and Ghana, entered the qualification race in the second round due to their status among the continent’s leading nations. The two-legged encounter between the Super Falcons and Comoros is scheduled to take place between 5 and 13 October 2026.
The qualification pathway to Los Angeles promises to be a demanding one. Africa has only two slots available for the women’s football tournament, with the qualification campaign spanning five rounds before the continent’s representatives are confirmed at the end of 2027.
Should the Super Falcons successfully navigate their tie against Comoros, they will progress to a third-round showdown against either Congo or Morocco in February and March 2027.
Beyond that, another stern test could await, with Tunisia, Senegal, Benin Republic, and Mali among the nations in line to challenge Nigeria in the fourth round as the battle for Olympic places gathers momentum.
The Super Falcons will approach the qualifiers with renewed determination after ending a 16-year Olympic absence by qualifying for the Paris 2024 Games. Now, the nine-time African champions are aiming to make back-to-back Olympic appearances and continue their presence on football’s biggest stages.
Nigeria's most successful outing at the Olympics remains the Athens 2004 Games, where the Super Falcons reached the quarter-finals, a feat they will hope to surpass on the road to Los Angeles in 2028.
