U-17 Women's World Cup: Queen Joseph urges Flamingos to fight like 'wounded lions' against Puerto Rico

Nigeria U-17 women’s national team forward Queen Joseph has urged her teammates to remain determined and focused as the Flamingos prepare to face Puerto Rico in their second Group B fixture at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

Speaking ahead of Tuesday’s encounter, Joseph reflected on Nigeria’s 2–1 defeat to Poland in their opening match, admitting that the result was disappointing but maintaining that the team gave its best effort.

“The result was not what we wanted, but we tried our best. Both teams had their different patterns of play, but I think Poland got it right that day. We have seen our mistakes and corrected them, so we are looking forward to our next game against Puerto Rico and getting the win,” she said.

The forward highlighted improved communication, concentration and clinical finishing as key factors that could help Nigeria secure victory in their next outing.

“We need more focus, communication and, most importantly, to convert our chances. Against Puerto Rico, it is a must-win game for us. We need to stay determined and fight like a wounded lion,” Joseph added.

Despite the importance of the fixture, Joseph said the players were not allowing pressure to affect them, although they fully understood the need to secure all three points.

“For me and my teammates, there is not much pressure, but we know we must win our game,” she stated.

The Flamingos forward also appealed to Nigerian fans and supporters to continue believing in the team, assuring them that the players remain committed to representing the country with pride on the global stage.

Joseph pledged that Nigeria would give its best against Puerto Rico as the team seeks to recover from its opening defeat and get its World Cup campaign back on track.

“Please, don’t lose hope in us,” she pleaded, urging Nigerians to continue supporting the team ahead of the crucial encounter in Morocco.
