Nigerian-American racing driver Ugo Ugochukwu has completed a remarkable turnaround to win the 2026 FIA Formula 3 Drivers’ Championship, becoming the first driver representing the United States to claim the title.

The 19-year-old secured the championship with a second-place finish in the season-ending Feature Race at Madrid’s Madring circuit, completing a decisive comeback in a title battle that had gone down to the final weekend.

Ugochukwu entered the final round trailing British rival Freddie Slater but produced the result he needed when it mattered most. Finland’s Tuukka Taponen won the race, while Ugochukwu finished second and Slater came home eighth.

The result left Ugochukwu with 159 points, 14 clear of Slater on 145, according to the official FIA Formula 3 standings.  

The championship represents the biggest achievement yet in Ugochukwu’s single-seater career and marks another significant step in his progression through the international motorsport ladder.

It also continues an extraordinary rise for the New York-born driver, who has strong Nigerian connections through his mother, former Nigerian supermodel Oluchi Onweagba.

Ugochukwu has previously spoken publicly about his Nigerian heritage and said his success on the international stage carries particular meaning for supporters in Africa.  

His title-winning campaign was built on consistency as much as outright speed.

Driving for Campos Racing in his second FIA Formula 3 season, Ugochukwu recorded two victories and seven podium finishes during the 2026 campaign, a substantial improvement from his rookie season with PREMA Racing in 2025, when he finished 16th overall with two podiums.  

The decisive turnaround came after Slater established an advantage during the middle portion of the season. Ugochukwu responded strongly in the closing rounds before completing the recovery in Madrid.

His final race also demonstrated the composure required to win a championship.

With the title within reach, Ugochukwu avoided unnecessary risks and brought the Campos Racing car home in second place.

“We knew we just had to keep it clean to clinch the title, and that’s what we did,” Ugochukwu said after the race, according to FIA Formula 3.  

The championship also capped a rapid progression through the junior categories.

Ugochukwu began competing in single-seaters in 2022 and went on to finish third in British Formula 4, second in Italian F4 and win the Euro 4 Championship. He also won the 2024 Macau Grand Prix before moving into FIA Formula 3.  

His 2026 title now places him among the recent FIA Formula 3 champions who have used the championship as a springboard towards Formula 2 and, ultimately, Formula 1.

Previous F3 champions such as Oscar Piastri and Gabriel Bortoleto have subsequently reached Formula 1.  

For Ugochukwu, however, the immediate significance is personal and historic.

He has become the first American FIA Formula 3 champion while simultaneously giving his Nigerian heritage another connection to the upper levels of international motorsport.

The next stage of his career is now expected to take him higher up the single-seater ladder, with the 2026 championship providing a major credential as he pursues his long-term ambition of reaching Formula 1.
