World Sports Journalists Day: SWAN President urges ethical, professional sports reporting

President of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Isaiah Benjamin, has called on sports journalists across the country to remain committed to professionalism, integrity and accuracy as they commemorate this year's World Sports Journalists Day.

In a goodwill message marking the occasion, Benjamin described sports journalism as a profession that extends beyond reporting scores and match results. He said sports journalists play a vital role in telling inspiring stories, promoting transparency and contributing to the overall development of sports.

He urged practitioners to embrace emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence and digital tools, while maintaining the core values of fairness, objectivity and credibility in their reporting.

Benjamin also reaffirmed SWAN's commitment to strengthening the capacity of its members through regular training programmes and strategic partnerships aimed at enhancing professional standards.

The SWAN President commended sports journalists for their resilience and dedication despite the challenges they face in carrying out their duties. He also called for stronger collaboration among the media, government, sports federations and other stakeholders to accelerate the growth and development of Nigerian sports.

Encouraging the next generation of sports journalists, Benjamin advised young professionals to build their careers on integrity, continuous learning and adherence to ethical standards. He stressed that responsible sports journalism remains a powerful instrument for fostering peace, promoting national unity and supporting youth development.
