‘I feel you every step’: Spanish star Vicky López’s emotional tribute to late Nigerian mother after Ballon d’Or glory

Barcelona and Spain midfielder Vicky López has dedicated her second consecutive Women’s Young Talent of the Year award at the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony to her late Nigerian mother, Joy Felix, in an emotional tribute to the woman whose memory continues to inspire her football career.

The 20-year-old received the honour at London’s Palladium on Monday, October 26, following another impressive season with Barcelona. However, her message to her mother emerged as one of the most personal moments of the ceremony.

“Although you can’t be with me physically, I feel your presence with every step I take. I owe it to you, Mum, to keep fighting and never give up,” López said in her tribute.

Felix, who was Nigerian, died from a brain tumour in 2018 when López was just 11 years old. Despite losing her mother during childhood, the midfielder has continued to honour her memory as she develops into one of the prominent young talents in women’s football.

Born in Vallecas, Madrid, to a Spanish father and Nigerian mother, López began playing football at an early age alongside her older brother. Her early development included playing street football, where she honed the close control, creativity and confidence that have become part of her playing style.

On the back of winning U17 Women's World Cup in India and emerging Best Player of the Tournament, her career took a significant turn in 2022 when she joined Barcelona at the age of 16. The move brought the challenge of adapting to a new environment and competing for a place at one of the leading clubs in women’s football.

Throughout her journey, López has continued to acknowledge her mother’s influence, often looking towards the sky after scoring as a personal gesture of remembrance.

By winning the Women’s Young Talent of the Year honour for a second consecutive time, she reinforced her standing among the outstanding young players in the women’s game. Her latest award represents another milestone in a career that has progressed rapidly since her arrival at Barcelona.

López’s 2025/26 campaign was particularly productive as she made 45 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 12 goals and providing 13 assists across competitions.

She also contributed to the club’s successful season, which included four major trophies - the Liga F title, Copa de la Reina, Spanish Super Cup and UEFA Women’s Champions League.

While the award recognised her individual performances, López’s acceptance message gave the achievement a deeper personal meaning. Her tribute reflected the continuing importance of family, memory and perseverance in her life beyond football.

Her Nigerian heritage also gives the story a special connection with Nigerian football followers. Although she represents Spain internationally, her maternal roots remain an important part of her background and family history.

At just 20, López has already accumulated significant experience at club and international levels. Her development at Barcelona has placed her among the young players attracting attention in the women’s game, with further opportunities to build on her achievements.

Yet, beyond the goals, assists and silverware, her words at the Ballon d’Or ceremony conveyed a message of gratitude and remembrance.
