2024 National Sports Festival: Cross River state takes early lead
On the second day of the 22nd National Sports Festival held in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Cross River State has taken an early lead in the medals tally, showcasing an impressive performance.
The state's weightlifting team, competing at the City’s Sports Centre, played a pivotal role in this achievement.
Notably, King Kalu Ufiem distinguished himself by winning three gold medals in the 54kg male category, excelling in the snatch, clean and jerk, and total events.
This remarkable accomplishment has positioned Cross River at the forefront of the overall standings.
Other states also made significant contributions in weightlifting, with Bayelsa’s Nnadozie Elvis Elechi earning two silver and one bronze medal, while an athlete from Oyo secured a silver and Ekiti claimed a bronze.
However, logistical challenges faced by the hockey federation's technical crew led to the postponement of the women's hockey match between Team Delta and Plateau State, which was originally scheduled for Monday at the Ijebu-Ode stadium and has now been rescheduled for today.
The sports festival, which commenced on Sunday, promises to deliver an exhilarating competition as athletes from all over the nation compete for honors.
Beyond the pursuit of medals, the festival serves to showcase Nigeria's rich sporting heritage and fosters a sense of national unity.
