2026 Olympic Day Celebration Gets New Date as NOC Announces Postponement
The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) has announced the postponement of the 2026 Olympic Day celebration, moving the event from June 27 to July 4, 2026.
The decision was reached during an emergency meeting of the NOC Sport-for-All Commission following consultations with participating states and key stakeholders.
According to the committee, the adjustment was necessary to provide states with additional time to finalize preparations and address logistical challenges ahead of the nationwide event.
Olympic Day is a global initiative of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), designed to promote physical activity, healthy living, social inclusion, and the values of Olympism through sports and recreation.
Chairman of the NOC Sport-for-All Commission, Dr. Abdul Ibrahim, urged organisers and participants across the country to remain committed to the programme despite prevailing economic challenges.
He also commended the leadership of the Nigeria Olympic Committee, headed by Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, for its continued dedication to grassroots sports development and the promotion of active lifestyles.
So far, 18 states and the Federal Capital Territory have indicated interest in participating in this year's celebration. The states include Delta, Bayelsa, Ondo, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Jigawa, Gombe, Plateau, Taraba, Oyo, Anambra, Zamfara, Imo, Yobe, Kogi, Sokoto, and Adamawa.
The committee expressed optimism that more states will join the programme before the new date.
Organisers have also appealed to corporate organisations, philanthropists, and sports enthusiasts to support the event, describing Olympic Day as a valuable platform for fostering national unity, intergenerational engagement, and healthier communities through sport.
