7th Fame International Women's Day Football Tournament: Team FIDA crowned champions
The Federation of International Female Lawyers Abuja, Team FIDA, emerged as the overall winner of the 7th edition of the FAME International Women’s Day (IWD) Football Tournament, held in Abuja.
In a fiercely contested final, Team FIDA triumphed over Team FAME with a narrow 1-0 victory, showcasing resilience and determination.
The event, organized by FAME Foundation, was part of the annual International Women’s Day celebrations, emphasizing women’s empowerment, teamwork, and inclusivity through sports.
This year’s tournament featured eight participating teams: Team FIDA, Team FAME, Team NUT (Nigeria Union of Teachers), Team ASWHAN, Team Bet9ja, Team IDP, Team FIRS, and Team ProSocial. Team FIDA battled through three tough matches on their way to securing the championship, while Team FAME settled for second place. The third position went to Team FIRS (Federal Inland Revenue Service), who edged past Team Bet9ja in a thrilling penalty shootout.
Speaking at the event, Aderonke Ogunkeye-Bello, Founder of FAME Foundation, reaffirmed the organization’s commitment to uniting women’s groups in fostering national development through sports.
The tournament was officially declared open by the Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, alongside Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC). Several dignitaries from various organizations were also in attendance, underscoring the importance of sports as a tool for gender inclusion and empowerment.
