African Youth Table Tennis Championship: Kogi dominates national selection of players

Kogi State has emerged as one of the biggest contributors to Nigeria’s campaign for the 2026 African Youth Table Tennis Championship after four of its promising young players secured places in the national team for the continental showpiece in Accra, Ghana.

The quartet of Joseph Victor, Sezuo Ize, Samson Joshua, and Joseph Marvelous earned their spots in Team Nigeria following impressive performances during the national camping exercise held at Babcock University, Ilishan Remo, Ogun State.

Their selection underscores the growing influence of Kogi State in the development of table tennis talents in Nigeria, with the players demonstrating remarkable skill, discipline, and consistency throughout the screening process.

Although Friday Agnes and Joseph Dominion were among the athletes invited to the national camp, they narrowly missed out on the final squad for the championship.

In another major boost for Kogi State, respected table tennis coach Friday Abah has also been named to Nigeria’s technical crew for the tournament. Abah, who serves as the Technical Director of the Kogi State Table Tennis Association, is widely regarded as one of the country’s leading grassroots coaches with a proven track record in talent development.

His inclusion is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s technical bench as the country targets a successful outing at the African Youth Championship.

With a blend of emerging stars and experienced coaching personnel from Kogi State playing key roles in the national team setup, Nigeria will head to Accra with high hopes of making a significant impact and challenging for top honours at the continental competition.
