Customs CG Bashir Adeniyi congratulates Flamingos after FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup triumph

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) and President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF), Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, has congratulated Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, following their historic triumph at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The Flamingos defeated former champions Japan 2-1 in Saturday’s final to become the first African nation to win the competition, which was hosted on the continent for the first time.

In a personally signed statement, Adeniyi praised the young Nigerian players for their inspirational performance, describing the achievement as a moment of immense pride for Nigeria and the entire African continent.

He said the victory was a product of collective determination, teamwork and commitment, noting that it went beyond individual brilliance to demonstrate the unity and strength of the squad.

The NWF president particularly highlighted the emergence of five different Nigerian players as Most Valuable Players (MVPs) in five matches, describing it as evidence of the team's depth, quality and shared responsibility.

“I want to congratulate the Flamingos for this historic success that has given millions of young Nigerians a reason to dream bigger. Their success proves that dedication, hard work, and collective effort can turn great aspirations into reality. Their remarkable feat has placed Nigeria and Africa on the global football map and demonstrated the immense potential of our young female athletes.

“What is more reassuring about the future of the team is that for five matches, five different MVPs emerged from the Nigerian team. Having five different players do so shows the depth of the team and how bright the future is,” he said.

Adeniyi also commended the technical crew for their dedication, sacrifices and mentorship, noting that their guidance played a significant role in developing the young players and preparing them for the historic achievement.

He said the coaching staff deserved special recognition for their contribution to the team's success, adding that their commitment had brought immense joy and renewed excitement to Nigerians.

The Customs boss further applauded the leadership of the National Sports Commission (NSC) for its deliberate efforts towards advancing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda in the sports sector.

He stressed that the Flamingos’ achievement represented more than a victory for Nigerian football, describing it as a major boost for the country’s sporting community.

According to him, the triumph has demonstrated Nigeria’s enormous sporting potential and reinforced the need for sustained investment in youth development and grassroots sports.
