Blessing Oborodudu leads Nigeria's charge as IOC unveils African role models for Dakar 2026 Youth Olympics

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has unveiled the first batch of Athlete Role Models for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games—with Nigeria proudly represented by wrestling icon Blessing Oborududu.

The announcement marks a major milestone as Africa prepares to host its first-ever Olympic event, with Dakar, Senegal, set to welcome young athletes from across the globe in 2026. For Nigeria, Oborududu’s inclusion highlights the country’s growing influence in global sports development and youth mentorship.

A silver medallist at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and one of Nigeria’s most decorated wrestlers, Oborududu will play a key role in mentoring young athletes during the Games—offering guidance on performance, discipline, and life beyond sport. Her journey from grassroots wrestling in Nigeria to the Olympic podium positions her as a powerful symbol of resilience and excellence for the next generation.

She is joined by a diverse group of 31 Olympians and elite athletes from across Africa and beyond, including Uganda’s middle-distance star Halimah Nakaayi, Egypt’s table tennis champion Dina Meshref, and Côte d’Ivoire’s taekwondo bronze medallist Ruth Gbagbi. Together, they reflect a strong African presence at Dakar 2026.

The Athlete Role Model programme—introduced at the inaugural Youth Olympics in Singapore 2010—remains central to the Games’ mission. Selected athletes will lead workshops, attend training sessions, and provide one-on-one mentorship to competitors, covering areas such as mental preparation, injury prevention, and career development.

Beyond competition, these role models will also engage with local communities in Senegal, reinforcing the cultural and social legacy of the Games across Africa. For Nigerian athletes and fans alike, Oborududu’s appointment is both a moment of pride and a reminder of the country’s potential to inspire globally.

The Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games will run from October 31 to November 13, bringing together around 2,700 athletes aged 17 and under across three host zones—Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly—setting the stage for a historic celebration of youth, sport, and African excellence.
