Central Eagles edge thriller as Southern Sharks cruise to first win in Nigeria Super League

Matchday two of the Nigeria Super League produced fireworks at the TBS Cricket Oval on Sunday, with Central Eagles surviving a late scare to claim a dramatic one-run victory over Eastern Elephants, while Southern Sharks bounced back emphatically from their opening-day loss.

The standout clash of the day came in the third fixture of the tournament as Central Eagles held their composure in a tense finish to secure the narrowest win of the competition so far.

After being asked to bat first, Central Eagles posted an impressive 157/4 in their 20 overs, inspired by a brilliant knock from wicketkeeper-batsman Selim Salau.

Salau dominated the innings with a superb 83 off 61 deliveries, smashing four boundaries and seven sixes in a commanding display at the crease.

Although Happy Bagshaw fell early, Mohammed Moshood and Emmanuel Boniface Oche helped stabilise the innings before Useni Prosper added late momentum with a quickfire unbeaten 22 from just nine balls.

Eastern Elephants responded positively in the chase through Paul Pam and Rahmon Ali, but disciplined spells from Ifeanyi Uboh and Azeez Warees kept the pressure firmly on.

The contest swung dramatically in the closing stages when Ipoli Victor launched a spirited counterattack, blasting 52 off 35 balls to put the Elephants within touching distance of victory.

However, Central Eagles kept their nerve in the final moments, producing crucial run-outs under pressure to restrict Eastern Elephants to 156/9 and seal a thrilling one-run win.

Salau was deservedly named Player of the Match for his match-defining innings.

In the day’s fourth fixture, Southern Sharks produced a strong response to their opening defeat with a commanding 48-run victory over Western Dolphins.

Choosing to bat first after winning the toss, the Sharks piled up 176/7 in 20 overs, one of the highest totals recorded in the tournament so far.

Isesele Evangel led the assault with an explosive 54 off 31 balls, peppering the boundary with 11 fours in a fearless batting display. Kenneth Boniface added further momentum with a rapid 47 from 25 deliveries, while Akhigbe Miracle contributed a valuable 28 runs.

Western Dolphins showed flashes of resistance with the ball through Udekwe Chiemelie and Monday Elijah, who both claimed two wickets, but the Sharks maintained their attacking intent throughout the innings.

In reply, Western Dolphins never truly recovered from early setbacks despite captain Vincent Adewoye’s brisk 35 off 21 balls. Destiny Chilemanya and Udekwe Chiemelie also attempted to revive the chase, but Southern Sharks remained firmly in control.

Ayeni Precious and Ismail Abdullahi claimed two wickets apiece, while Akhigbe Miracle impressed with an important all-round display as Western Dolphins were bowled out for 128 in 16.4 overs.

Evangel was named Player of the Match following his explosive half-century and influential performance with the bat.
