Super Falcons cruise past Benin's Amazones in 2026 WAFCON Qualifiers

The Super Falcons of Nigeria began their title defence in style with a 2–0 victory over Benin Republic in the first leg of their WAFCON 2026 qualifier on Friday at the Stade de Kégué in Lomé, Togo.

In their first outing since lifting the WAFCON trophy in Morocco, head coach Justin Madugu fielded a strong lineup featuring Chiamaka Nnadozie in goal, with Michelle Alozie, Osinachi Ohale, Tosin Demehin, and Ashleigh Plumptre forming the defensive line.

Taiwo Afolabi made her Super Falcons debut in midfield alongside Deborah Abiodun and captain Rasheedat Ajibade, while Esther Okoronkwo, Chinwendu Ihezuo, and Folashade Ijamilusi led the attack.

Nigeria started on the front foot, dominating possession and keeping the hosts pinned back. The Falcons nearly took the lead early on when a thunderous strike rattled the crossbar before the Benin goalkeeper made two fine saves to deny them.

Their pressure eventually paid off in the 24th minute when Chinwendu Ihezuo produced a classy lob over the goalkeeper after a superb pass from Abiodun to make it 1–0.

Benin’s Yenido Romaine Gandonou tried to spark a response, using her pace to trouble the Nigerian defence, but Nnadozie stood firm with a sharp save to preserve the lead.

Just before halftime, the Falcons doubled their advantage as Esther Okoronkwo finished clinically from another Abiodun assist, sealing a well-deserved 2–0 lead at the break.

The second half was a display of composure and control from the Nigerians, who comfortably managed the game and limited Benin to few chances.

Coach Madugu made several changes late on, Asisat Oshoala replaced Okoronkwo, debutant Joy Omewa came on for Ihezuo, and Christy Ucheibe took the place of Afolabi in the 80th minute. Four minutes later, Shukurat Oladipo replaced Abiodun, who was instrumental throughout the match.

A late reflex save from Nnadozie ensured Nigeria kept a clean sheet and secured a solid first-leg advantage.

The Super Falcons will host the second leg at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta on Tuesday, October 28, 2025.
