Chukwuebuka Enekwechi throws season best to claim silver at Ostrava Golden Spike

Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi continued his impressive 2026 campaign with a second-place finish in the men’s shot put at the prestigious Ostrava Golden Spike meeting, producing a season’s best throw to reinforce his status as one of the world’s most consistent competitors in the event.

Competing against a high-quality field packed with elite throwers, Enekwechi delivered his best mark of 21.43 metres in the third round, a performance good enough to secure the silver medal.

Italy’s Leonardo Fabbri emerged victorious with a winning throw of 21.91 metres, while New Zealand’s Tom Walsh finished third after recording 21.26 metres.

The podium finish is the latest highlight in what has been a strong season for the Nigerian star. Enekwechi has regularly challenged for medals on the international circuit and continues to build momentum ahead of the year’s major championships.

Earlier this month, he struck gold at the Znamensky Memorial in Russia, dominating the competition with a winning throw of 21.27 metres. His performance comfortably outdistanced Mexico’s Juan Vazquez Gomez and Romania’s Andrei Rares Toader, who settled for second and third places respectively.

He also featured at the LA Grand Prix, where he placed fifth with a throw of 21.33 metres in a contest won by Jamaica’s Rajindra Campbell.

With a reputation as one of Africa’s finest shot put athletes, Enekwechi’s latest performance in Ostrava further highlights his remarkable consistency in an event often overshadowed on the continent by sprinting.

Given the stature of the Ostrava Golden Spike, one of Europe’s most respected athletics meetings that regularly attracts the world’s best field athlete, the Nigerian’s silver-medal effort stands as another significant milestone in a season that continues to gather momentum.
