DR Congo superfan Lumumba Vea returns to spotlight after ebola quarantine

Democratic Republic of Congo's most famous football supporter, Michel Kuka Mboladinga, made his long-awaited debut at the 2026 FIFA World Cup during the Leopards' Group K encounter with Colombia after missing the team's opening match because of an Ebola-related quarantine.

Widely known as "Lumumba Vea," Mboladinga has become an iconic figure in African football for his striking resemblance to Patrice Lumumba, the DR Congo's first prime minister. He is renowned for dressing like the national hero and standing motionless throughout matches with his right arm raised in a symbolic gesture.

The celebrated supporter was absent from DR Congo's opening 1-1 draw against Portugal after being subjected to a mandatory 21-day quarantine following Ebola outbreaks in his home country.

After successfully completing the isolation period, Mboladinga rejoined the Congolese contingent and took his place at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara for the team's second Group K fixture against Colombia.

Speaking previously about his unique appearance, Mboladinga described his tribute to Lumumba as a "sign of peace" for the Congolese people.

His profile rose significantly during the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, where his distinctive presence captured international attention. Since then, he has become one of the most recognisable supporters in African football.

Ahead of kick-off against Colombia, Mboladinga posed for photographs with both Congolese and Colombian fans before assuming his customary position in the stands to silently cheer on the Leopards.

However, his return did not bring the desired result for DR Congo. The Leopards suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat, with Colombia securing victory through a deflected strike from defender Daniel Muñoz.

Despite the setback, Mboladinga's return added colour, symbolism and passion to DR Congo's World Cup journey, earning admiration from supporters inside the stadium and football fans watching around the globe.
