Billy Saunders: Anthony Joshua's power could pose serious problem for Tyson Fury in potential heavyweight super fight

Former two-weight world champion Billy Joe Saunders believes Anthony Joshua’s strength and precision punching could make him a dangerous opponent for Tyson Fury if the long-discussed all-British heavyweight showdown finally takes place.

Saunders, a close friend and long-time supporter of Fury, offered a balanced assessment of the proposed clash, highlighting the contrasting strengths that make both fighters formidable in their own right.

Speaking to The Stomping Ground, Saunders pointed to Joshua’s physical advantages while acknowledging Fury’s superior boxing ability and movement.

“Both of them have their own strengths,” Saunders said. “AJ is stronger and punches cleaner. Tyson is the better boxer and much slicker.

“I think it comes down to who puts together the best game plan on the night.”

Despite years of speculation, a fight between the two British heavyweights has yet to be officially announced, with no date or venue confirmed.

Promoter Frank Warren has previously stated that discussions among all parties must take place before any formal agreement can be reached.

Before a potential blockbuster meeting can be finalized, both men are expected to navigate separate assignments.

Joshua, 36, is scheduled to face Kristian Prenga in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on July 25. The contest will mark his first appearance since his sixth-round stoppage victory over Jake Paul in December and comes after the personal tragedy of losing two close friends in a car accident in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, Fury, 37, returned from a 16-month absence in April, earning a points victory over Arslanbek Makhmudov. However, the performance was widely regarded as below the standards typically associated with the former heavyweight champion. Fury is reportedly targeting another bout in August before revisiting plans for a showdown with Joshua.

Saunders also suggested that Joshua could gain a tactical advantage through his close working relationship with Oleksandr Usyk, who has previously defeated Fury.

According to Saunders, insights from Usyk’s success against the “Gypsy King” could provide Joshua’s team with valuable guidance on how to approach one of boxing’s most elusive and skilled heavyweights should the long-awaited contest eventually materialize.
