Driver escapes death as train crushes car at Lagos railway crossing
A 55 year old driver narrowly escaped death after a train collided with his Honda car at the PWD railway intersection in Lagos on Friday morning.
The accident involved a train travelling towards Agege and a Honda car with registration number EKY 902 JT, according to Adebayo Taofiq, Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
Taofiq disclosed that LASTMA operatives, working alongside security personnel, rescued the driver and removed the badly damaged vehicle from the railway track.
He added that no casualty was recorded in the incident, while the train continued its journey towards Agege after the wreckage was cleared.
Despite the successful rescue operation, the incident triggered heavy traffic congestion around the PWD axis, causing difficulties for motorists.
Taofiq said the damaged vehicle was subsequently handed over to security personnel for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision.
Meanwhile, LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, commended the agency's operatives and security personnel for their swift response and effective coordination during the rescue operation.
He urged motorists to exercise caution around railway crossings and designated train corridors, warning them against attempting to cross the tracks when a train is approaching or in motion.
Bakare-Oki stressed that strict adherence to railway safety regulations and prompt emergency response were essential to preventing avoidable accidents and protecting lives.
He reiterated his call on motorists and other road users to obey traffic and railway safety rules, emphasising that human life must always remain a priority.
