Edo Queens petition CAF, seek annulment of WAFU-B Final continuation against Ampem Darkoa

Edo Queens FC have formally petitioned the Confederation of African Football (CAF), seeking the annulment of the continuation of their WAFU Zone B qualifying final against Ghanaian side Ampem Darkoa Ladies FC, played on October 29, 2026.

The petition, issued by the Edo State Government, challenges the circumstances surrounding the continuation of the final and requests that CAF suspend confirmation of the WAFU-B qualification place pending the determination of the case.

The original final was played on September 5, 2026, in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, and ended 2-2 after 90 minutes. Edo Queens subsequently won the penalty shootout 4-1.

However, CAF’s Organising Committee, in a decision dated September 26, ruled that the penalty shootout had no sporting effect and ordered the match to resume from the start of extra time, with the score at 2-2. The decision was upheld by the CAF Appeal Board on October 16.

Ampem Darkoa eventually defeated Edo Queens 3-2 after extra time in the October 29 continuation, with a 92nd-minute goal deciding the contest.

Edo Queens Raise Three Grounds of Protest

In their petition, Edo Queens challenged the continuation on three principal grounds.

Unauthorised change of venue

The Nigerian club alleged that the match was moved from Ouagadougou to Cairo, Egypt, without the required confirmation from WAFU Zone B in accordance with CAF’s decision.

Failure to restore sporting conditions

Edo Queens claimed they were prevented from fielding eligible players who had featured in the original encounter. The club also raised concerns over the accommodation arrangements for its delegation, alleging that members were housed at a military base rather than a conventional team hotel.

Inadequate official communication

The club further alleged that clear and timely information regarding the venue, kick-off time and other match arrangements was not provided, potentially affecting its preparations for the encounter.

Reliefs Sought by Edo Queens

Edo Queens has asked CAF to treat the petition as urgent and suspend final confirmation of the WAFU-B qualification place until the matter is resolved.

The club is seeking the following reliefs:

A declaration that the October 29 continuation of the final is null and void.

An order directing WAFU Zone B to produce the required venue confirmation, match sheets, substitution records, player eligibility lists and disciplinary records.

An order for a full 90-minute replay under properly regulated conditions, with eligible players and at the original venue in Ouagadougou.

Alternatively, if a replay cannot be completed before the CAF Women’s Champions League begins on November 1, 2026, a declaration that Edo Queens are the winners of the WAFU Zone B tournament.

The petition places the dispute over the WAFU-B final before CAF as Edo Queens seek a review of the circumstances surrounding the match continuation and the qualification outcome.

CAF’s determination of the petition will be crucial to resolving the club’s challenge to the result.
