FIBA congratulates Abdullahi Mustapha on Election as NBBF President
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has congratulated Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha on his election as President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), following the successful conduct of the federation’s elective congress on October 15, 2026.
In an official letter signed by FIBA Secretary General Andreas Zagklis, the global basketball governing body extended its congratulations to Mustapha and all elected board members who will oversee the federation’s affairs for the 2026–2030 term.
FIBA acknowledged receipt of the NBBF’s official communication confirming the outcome of the election and commended the federation for its commitment to good governance, constitutional compliance and adherence to the applicable regulations of the international body.
The recognition represents an important endorsement of the electoral process and the emergence of the new NBBF leadership, while highlighting the significance of transparent administration in the development of basketball in Nigeria.
FIBA also acknowledged the support provided by relevant Nigerian authorities and stakeholders throughout the electoral process, stressing the importance of institutional cooperation in strengthening the administration of the sport.
The international federation further expressed appreciation to the outgoing NBBF board, led by Engr. Ahmadu Musa Kida, for its contributions and service to Nigerian basketball during its tenure.
In his correspondence, Zagklis recalled his recent meeting with Mustapha in Berlin and expressed his anticipation of meeting the new president again in person.
He also wished Mustapha and his fellow board members success as they begin their four-year tenure.
With FIBA’s recognition, the new NBBF administration is expected to focus on strengthening governance structures, expanding basketball development initiatives and improving Nigeria’s competitiveness at continental and international competitions.
The 2026–2030 leadership period presents an opportunity for the federation to build on existing foundations and pursue sustainable growth across Nigeria’s basketball ecosystem.
