Senegal set for legal showdown with CAF as FA chief vows to fight AFCON verdict

The Senegalese Football Federation has escalated its response to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following the controversial decision to strip the country of hosting rights for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with top officials now preparing for a decisive legal battle.

Secretary General Abdoulaye Seydou Sow delivered a firm message to citizens, insisting that Senegal will challenge the ruling at the highest level.

He described CAF’s action as unjustified and lacking any legal merit, stressing that the federation will immediately consult its legal team before heading to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) to seek redress.

“This is a travesty; this decision is based on absolutely nothing,” Sow declared, reaffirming the federation’s confidence in overturning the verdict. He assured Senegalese fans that the leadership remains resolute and united in defending the country’s position.

The dispute stems from CAF’s recent decision to reassign hosting rights for the tournament, a move that has sparked widespread criticism across the continent and beyond. Senegal had been widely praised for its preparations, building on the nation’s rising football profile after winning the 2021 AFCON and consistently performing strongly on the global stage.

Sow did not hold back in his criticism of CAF, labeling the decision “a shame for Africa” and pointing to the wave of international backlash as evidence that the ruling lacks credibility.

His remarks, delivered via Radiodiffusion Télévision Sénégalaise, reflect growing frustration within Senegalese football circles.

Beyond the immediate controversy, this standoff highlights longstanding tensions around governance and transparency in African football administration. By taking the matter to CAS, Senegal is not only seeking to reclaim hosting rights but also pushing for accountability within CAF’s decision-making processes.

With legal proceedings now imminent, the battle could set a major precedent for how disputes between national federations and continental bodies are resolved placing Senegal at the center of a potentially historic case in African football.
