Nigeria defies setbacks to secure double podium at Bangkok Scrabble Championsip
Nigeria once again underlined its dominance in global Scrabble as the national team delivered an impressive performance at the prestigious Causeway Scrabble Challenge in Bangkok, Thailand, recording multiple podium finishes despite facing significant pre tournament challenges.
The championship, held from May 29 to June 1, 2026, attracted over 440 players from more than 30 countries, making it one of the largest and most competitive Scrabble tournaments in the world. Nigeria, represented by 26 players and five officials, showcased its depth, quality, and resilience against some of the finest minds in the game.
Leading the country's charge was Olaribigbe Hakeem, who finished as First Runner Up in the highly competitive Division One category. Hakeem amassed 24 wins from 36 games and posted an impressive cumulative spread of +1355 points to secure a place on the podium.
Nigeria's biggest triumph came in Division Three, where Mbonu Olachi produced a dominant display to emerge champion. Olachi recorded 27 victories from 36 matches and finished with a remarkable spread of +2141 points, highlighting Nigeria's strength across different categories.
The performances drew praise from the Director General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, who commended the athletes for their resilience and professionalism.
According to Olopade, the achievements in Bangkok further affirm Nigeria's position as the world's leading Scrabble nation, noting that the players displayed exceptional character and excellence in one of the toughest competitions on the international calendar.
The Nigerian contingent featured some of the sport's biggest names, including reigning African Champion Temileyin Doko, current National Champion Ezinore George, and the country's highest rated player, Jimoh Abdulmumuni. The team also included promising youngsters competing under the Scrabble to Schools Initiative, a programme designed to expose emerging talents to elite international competition.
Nigeria's success was even more remarkable considering the team battled visa related challenges that disrupted preparations and forced several players to enter the tournament shortly after arriving in Thailand.
Despite losing valuable acclimatization and training time, the players fought back strongly to secure podium finishes and uphold the country's reputation as a global Scrabble powerhouse.
As the reigning World Scrabble Champion nation following its historic success in Accra last year, Nigeria's latest achievements in Bangkok further strengthen its standing as both Africa's and the world's foremost Scrabble playing country.
With preparations now shifting towards the African Scrabble Championships in October and the World Youth Scrabble Championships in Kenya later this year, Team Nigeria remains determined to defend its continental and global honours while continuing to inspire the next generation of champions
