Flamingos won't fear Brazil, says Azeezat Oduntan
Nigeria’s stand-in captain, Azeezat Oduntan, says the Flamingos will give their best when they face Brazil in Wednesday’s semi-final of the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.
Oduntan, who scored the decisive penalty in Nigeria’s 1-0 quarter-final victory over Venezuela, expressed confidence in the team’s ability to rise to the challenge against the South Americans.
The defender described her feelings after the hard-fought victory over Venezuela as exciting, acknowledging the quality of their opponents and the determination required to secure a place in the last four.
“I feel so good and excited. The Venezuelans are a good side. We kept pushing,” Oduntan told SavidNews.com.
The Flamingos will now turn their attention to Brazil, who booked their semi-final place with a 2-1 comeback victory over China PR.
Oduntan insisted that Nigeria would maintain the same determination and commitment, stressing that the team would not approach the crucial encounter any differently.
“We will keep trying our best, and the match against Brazil won’t be an exception,” she added.
The stand-in captain also appealed to Nigerians and supporters of the team to continue praying for the players as they pursue a historic first appearance in the competition’s final.
“Those watching us out there should keep praying for us. We will try our best to get to the final,” she said.
Reflecting on her contribution against Venezuela, Oduntan expressed satisfaction with the defensive effort that helped Nigeria preserve their advantage and secure qualification.
“It was a great day for me to be able to make sure that they did not score against us,” she said.
Nigeria’s victory over Venezuela secured the country’s second semi-final appearance in the history of the competition, following their bronze-medal finish at the 2022 edition in India.
The Flamingos will face Brazil on Wednesday, November 4, at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, with a place in the final at stake.
