Folashade Oluwafemiayo named Team Nigeria captain for 2026 Commonwealth Games

The National Sports Commission (NSC) has appointed Nigeria's celebrated para powerlifter, Folashade Oluwafemiayo, as captain of Team Nigeria for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.
The appointment recognises the outstanding achievements of the two-time Paralympic champion and multiple world medallist, while reaffirming the Commission's commitment to rewarding excellence, leadership and professionalism.
Announcing the decision, NSC Director General Bukola Olopade said the choice was a deliberate one, stressing that Oluwafemiayo's remarkable career and inspiring personality make her the ideal figure to lead the nation's contingent.
"We are intentional about the selection of our team captain. Folashade Oluwafemiayo is the ideal choice, having consistently demonstrated exceptional professionalism, resilience, and excellence throughout her distinguished career. She is a multiple gold medallist, a former world champion, and one of Nigeria's most decorated para athletes. Her leadership qualities and winning mentality make her an inspiration to every member of Team Nigeria," Olopade said.
Oluwafemiayo heads to Glasgow with an enviable résumé that includes four world titles and two Paralympic gold medals, cementing her place as one of Nigeria's greatest sporting icons.
She will now be tasked with leading Team Nigeria both on and off the field as the country seeks another successful outing at the Commonwealth Games.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games will take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2, 2026.
