Galatasaray Consider Osimhen for Captaincy Role Amid Icardi Uncertainty
Galatasaray are reportedly considering handing the club captaincy to Victor Osimhen if Argentine striker Mauro Icardi does not remain at the club next season.
The development was disclosed by Turkish football pundit Ali Naci Kucuk, who revealed that the Nigerian forward has emerged as a leading figure within the Galatasaray dressing room following his impressive performances and growing influence at the club.
“Galatasaray wants to give the captain’s armband to Victor Osimhen if they don’t continue with Mauro Icardi,” Kucuk said.
Osimhen has enjoyed a remarkable spell since joining the Istanbul giants, playing a pivotal role in the club’s recent domestic success. The Super Eagles striker has helped Galatasaray secure consecutive Turkish Süper Lig titles and a Turkish Cup triumph while scoring more than 50 goals across multiple competitions.
The Nigerian international also delivered another outstanding campaign this season, registering 15 league goals and five assists in 22 Süper Lig appearances.
In Europe, Osimhen contributed seven goals and three assists in 10 UEFA Champions League matches before Galatasaray’s elimination at the hands of Liverpool in the Round of 16.
Club officials and supporters are believed to view the potential captaincy as recognition of Osimhen’s leadership qualities, professionalism and growing status within the squad.
The striker was also among Galatasaray players who paid a courtesy visit to Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the Presidential Complex in Ankara following the club’s 26th league title success.
During the visit, Galatasaray president Dursun Ozbek presented the club’s jersey to the Turkish president as players and officials celebrated another historic season.
Galatasaray are now chasing another milestone as they seek a fifth consecutive Süper Lig title next season, a feat that would make them the first club in Turkish football history to achieve such dominance.
Despite increasing transfer speculation linking Osimhen with clubs such as Chelsea, FC Barcelona and Bayern Munich, Galatasaray remain determined to retain the Nigerian striker.
Ozbek had previously insisted that the club would not entertain offers below €100 million for Osimhen, underlining his importance to the team’s long-term ambitions.
