Game-Changer for Athletics: Sagamu Stadium set to become Nigeria's first track-and-field only venue
The transformation of Sagamu Stadium in Ogun State is laying the groundwork for a major leap forward in Nigerian athletics. Expected to open next year, the facility will become the nation's first stadium dedicated exclusively to track and field events.
A collaborative effort between the Ogun State Government and the National Sports Commission (NSC), the redevelopment goes beyond a routine upgrade. The project will equip the stadium with international-standard infrastructure, including a dedicated warm-up area, a state-of-the-art medical centre, and essential athlete support facilities designed to create a world-class training and competition environment.
Director General of the National Sports Commission, Bukola Olopade, highlighted the initiative as a key element of a broader national strategy to overhaul Nigeria's sporting infrastructure.
"What we are doing here goes beyond giving the stadium a facelift. We are creating a dedicated athletics facility that will provide our athletes with the right environment to train and compete," Olopade stated, noting that the project is one of over 30 sports infrastructure developments currently underway across the country.
Olopade emphasized that integrating specialized warm-up zones and medical support is critical for international recognition. "These are important considerations if Nigeria wants to attract and successfully host major international championships."
Once completed, the modern facility will bolster Nigeria's ability to host major continental track-and-field events while giving local talent access to elite training conditions—positioning Ogun State as a vital hub for African athletics.
