Governor Bago pledges modern hockey pitch as Niger Flickers intensify Premier League preparations
Governor of Niger State, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to sports development with plans to construct a modern synthetic hockey pitch in Minna.
Governor Bago made the pledge during a visit to the training camp of Niger Flickers Hockey Club in Abuja, where the team is preparing for the National Premier League set to begin on June 24.
Addressing players and officials during the visit, the governor expressed satisfaction with the large number of youths actively engaged in hockey, describing sports as a powerful tool for youth empowerment, social development and crime prevention. He commended the team’s dedication and level of preparation ahead of the national championship, assuring them of sustained government support to achieve greater success.
According to the governor, the proposed hockey facility in Minna will provide the club with a standard venue for camping, training and hosting competitive matches within the state. He noted that the project forms part of his administration’s broader efforts to strengthen sports infrastructure and promote talent development across Niger State.
Governor Bago also lauded Deputy Comptroller Abubakar Lucky Aliyu of the Nigeria Customs Service and members of the hockey board for their contributions to the growth and advancement of hockey in the state and beyond.
Also present during the visit was the Chairman of the Niger State Sports Commission, Hon. Danjuma Abdul Masu, whose initiatives have been widely credited with revitalising sports development and enhancing sporting competitions across Niger State.
