In a landmark move for sports and business collaboration in Akwa Ibom State, Ibom Air has signed a strategic partnership with Akwa United Football Club, becoming the club’s official shirt sponsor in a deal worth ₦200 million over two years.
The agreement, unveiled at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, will see Ibom Air provide both cash and in-kind support, split evenly across the total package value. The ceremony drew notable figures from the sports fraternity, government, and media circles, highlighting the growing synergy between corporate investment and football development in Nigeria.
Speaking at the signing, George Uriesi, CEO of Ibom Air, said the partnership underscores the airline’s dedication to community development and youth empowerment through sports.
“Akwa United have a rich football legacy and are on the path to rebuilding. This partnership reflects our belief in sports as a force that unites and inspires. We’re proud to stand with the club as they aim to return to the top of Nigerian football,” Uriesi said.
Akwa United Chairman, Joseph Eno, expressed gratitude to Ibom Air, calling the sponsorship a “timely boost” to the club’s rebuilding efforts.
“This partnership will motivate our players and technical crew. Wearing the Ibom Air logo will remind us of the excellence we represent and push us to deliver our best,” Eno stated.
Also speaking, Elder Paul Bassey, Akwa Ibom State Commissioner for Sports, praised the collaboration as a milestone achievement aligned with Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda, which promotes private sector participation in sports.
“This partnership is a testament to our vision of building strong links between sports and enterprise. It sets a new benchmark for sports development in the state,” Bassey remarked.
The event also featured the unveiling of Akwa United’s new home jersey, the launch of working committees, and a media interaction session.
