Junior D'Tigress set sights on classification games at U-19 World Cup
The dream run for Nigeria’s U19 women’s basketball team, the Junior D’Tigress, has come to an end in the title race at the 2025 FIBA U19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Brno, Czech Republic. Now, their focus shifts to the classification round for 9th–12th place, starting Friday, July 18.
The girls made a bold statement early in Group B with a thrilling 93–88 win over China their first-ever victory at this level. Nora Ezike lit up the court with 25 points, while teammates Idubamo Beggi, Tobenna Nweke, and Jessica Ajayi all stepped up in what turned out to be a historic night for Nigerian women’s basketball.
But the road ahead got tougher as Nigeria fell to Canada in a one-sided game (42–113) and then to Portugal (61–79), showing moments of brilliance but also signs of inexperience. Despite the losses, the young side held their heads high and advanced to the Round of 16, where they were knocked out by Hungary in a 50–77 defeat.
Now, the Junior D’Tigress will take on Argentina in the classification round on Friday at 15:00 WAT. Like Nigeria, Argentina are also out of the title race, finishing their group stage without a win. Both teams will be fighting for pride, growth, and a chance to end their tournament on a high.
A win against Argentina would set up a final matchup against either Brazil or Korea in the 9–12 placement games.
But for Nigeria, this stage means more than just rankings. It’s another shot to build momentum, gain experience, and cap off their World Cup debut with something to be proud of.
From their stunning win over China to facing some of the world’s top youth teams, the Junior D’Tigress have already made their mark. One more chance awaits to play their hearts out, show their growth, and remind the world that Nigerian basketball is rising.
