MOB National Taekwondo Championship set to debut in Lagos
The inaugural Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (MOB) National Taekwondo Championship is set to take place in Lagos from September 17, promising exciting action for taekwondo enthusiasts across Nigeria.
The tournament is sponsored by Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, a former Lagos State Commissioner for Sports and Commissioner for Information and Strategy, who currently serves as Senate Leader.
A strong advocate of sports development, Bamidele believes sporting activities can play a significant role in promoting unity and bringing people together. He has supported several sporting initiatives over the years.
President of the Taekwondo Federation of Nigeria, Tayo Popoola, welcomed the championship, describing it as a positive development and an example of stakeholders contributing to sports development alongside government efforts.
“We are so happy about this, and we believe it is coming at a time when we are also working towards the next African Games and the Olympic Games,” Popoola said.
According to him, the maiden edition will provide the federation with an opportunity to assess the progress of athletes and identify potential representatives for future continental and international competitions.
“This is the maiden edition of the competition, and we have high expectations that the athletes will enjoy themselves in Lagos. It is an opportunity to continue to look at the progress of our athletes and know those we expect to represent us in future continental and global events,” he added.
The MOB National Taekwondo Championship, which has been tagged the ‘Tournament of Unity,’ is open to states, clubs and schools from across the country.
Popoola disclosed that participation will be strictly in team format, adding that the response from different parts of Nigeria has so far been encouraging.
“Participation can only be in team format, and I am happy that so far we are having good responses from various parts of the country. The federation will continue to work so hard to make the event hitch-free,” he said.
