Commonwealth: Nigeria shows interest to bid for 2030 Games
Nigeria has shown interest in submitting a bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games.
The Nigeria Olympic Committee announced that it has successfully met the March 28, 2025, deadline for expressing interest in hosting the Commonwealth Games in Abuja, following an executive committee meeting held on April 3, 2025.
However, a formal bid can only proceed with the support of the Federal Government.
In a statement from Tony Nezianya, the Public Relations Officer of the NOC, it was highlighted that Nigeria's bid for the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Abuja represents a significant opportunity to showcase the nation's development, elevate its international profile, and invigorate its sports culture.
The last major multi-sport event hosted by Nigeria was the African Games in 2003 (COJA 2003) in Abuja, where the country demonstrated its capability and commitment to organizing large-scale international events.
This prior experience will serve as a strong foundation for Nigeria to host again, illustrating its ability to manage the logistics, hospitality, and infrastructure development necessary for such events.
Additionally, this bid process could stimulate investment in sports infrastructure, as the pursuit of the Games may catalyze enhancements in sports facilities throughout the country, particularly in Abuja. This revitalization could benefit the local sports economy and improve national sports facilities for future generations.
Hosting the Games would lead to the construction and upgrading of sports venues, transportation systems, and accommodations, yielding long-term advantages for both the sports community and the general populace.
Moreover, this initiative has the potential to significantly boost tourism by attracting visitors from around the globe, which would, in turn, support local businesses, create jobs, and enhance the hospitality sector.
The preparation and execution of the Games are expected to generate numerous economic opportunities.
