Masai Ujiri takes charge of basketball operations in Dallas

The Dallas Mavericks have taken a bold step toward reshaping their future, appointing veteran executive Masai Ujiri as Team President and Alternate Governor.

Tasked with steering the franchise into a new era, Ujiri will oversee every aspect of basketball operations from roster construction and player personnel decisions to scouting while collaborating closely with leadership to define the team’s philosophy and long term vision.

“The Dallas Mavericks are committed to being a world class organization with a strong culture and focused on winning championships.

Masai Ujiri is one of the great basketball leaders of this generation and his addition to our franchise is a critical step in meeting our goals,” said Mavericks Governor Patrick Dumont. “We are honored to have him join the Mavs family.

We welcome his energy and determination along with his leadership, experience and many accomplishments as a basketball executive. We are very excited about the future of our team.”

Ujiri arrives in Dallas with a decorated résumé, most recently serving as Vice Chairman and President of the Toronto Raptors, where he guided the franchise to its historic first NBA Championship in 2019.

Known across the league for his sharp eye for talent and disciplined team-building approach, he has built a reputation for crafting competitive, sustainable rosters.

Beyond the court, Ujiri’s influence extends globally. As founder of Giants of Africa, he has spent decades empowering young people through sport, education, and leadership initiatives.

His impact was further recognized in 2025 when he was named a United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Advocate.

“I’m honoured to join the Dallas Mavericks and step into this role at such an important time for the organization,” said Ujiri.

“This is a franchise with a proud history, passionate fans, and a commitment to winning. I look forward to working with our players, coaches, and leadership team to build something that reflects that standard and competes at the highest level. We will win in Dallas.”

Ujiri’s journey to the top of NBA leadership began with scouting roles at the Orlando Magic and Denver Nuggets before rising to lead Denver’s front office, where he earned NBA Executive of the Year honors.

His influence continues to grow beyond the NBA. In 2026, he joined the ownership group of the Toronto Tempo, contributing to the advancement of women’s basketball while maintaining his strong commitment to player development and organizational culture.

The Mavericks are set to formally introduce Ujiri alongside Dumont at a press conference today at the American Airlines Center, marking the beginning of what the franchise hopes will be a transformative new chapter.
