Morocco FA President Fouzi Lekjaa appointed Economy and Finance Minister

Fouzi Lekjaa, president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), has been appointed Morocco’s Minister of Economy and Finance and Public Performance as part of the country’s new government.

The appointment was announced on Friday, October 16, following a ceremony at the Royal Palace in Rabat presided over by King Mohammed VI, where members of the new government were formally appointed.

Lekjaa’s new role places him at the head of a key government portfolio while he remains one of the most prominent administrators in African football. His appointment brings together his experience in public finance and his long-standing leadership of Moroccan football.

Before the latest appointment, Lekjaa served as Morocco’s budget minister and held senior responsibilities within the country’s financial administration. Morocco’s Ministry of Economy and Finance also published an official notice confirming his appointment as minister.

In football, Lekjaa has led the FRMF for more than a decade and has been closely associated with Morocco’s expanding investment in the game, including preparations connected to the country’s role as co-host of the 2030 FIFA World Cup with Spain and Portugal.

His appointment comes after Morocco’s parliamentary elections on September 23 and the formation of a new government led by Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri. The cabinet was formally appointed by the King on Friday.

Lekjaa’s dual involvement in government and football places him at the intersection of public finance and a major national sporting project. Morocco is preparing for the 2030 World Cup alongside its co-hosts, with infrastructure and organisational planning among the country’s long-term priorities.

The new minister’s immediate responsibilities will include overseeing the economy and public finances within the framework of the new administration. His appointment is also likely to draw attention from the football community because of his continuing prominence in the governance of the sport.

Morocco’s new cabinet includes a separate Minister of Youth, Culture and Sports, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, while Lekjaa takes charge of the economy and finance portfolio.

Lekjaa’s appointment marks another chapter in a career spanning financial administration, government service and football leadership, at a time when Morocco is preparing for major international sporting commitments.
