President Federation Cup holders crash out as semi final line-up emerges
The race for the 2026 Women’s President Federation Cup took a dramatic turn on Wednesday as defending champions Rivers Angels and newly crowned NWFL Premiership winners Edo Queens both bowed out at the quarter-final stage.
At the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Rivers Angels saw their title defence come to an abrupt end after a hard-fought 1-0 defeat to FC Robo Queens. Opeyemi Ajakaye proved to be the difference-maker, finding the back of the net in the 39th minute to send Robo Queens into the semi-finals and end Rivers Angels’ hopes of retaining the trophy.
There was more heartbreak for Edo Queens in Ayingba, Kogi State, where the league champions were edged out by Nasarawa Amazons. After a tense and closely contested encounter finished goalless in regulation time, the Amazons held their composure in the shootout, winning 5-3 on penalties to secure their place in the last four.
Heartland Queens also progressed, but not without a scare. The Owerri-based side appeared to be cruising after goals from Chimebere Opara and Umejiaku Oluebube handed them a two-goal advantage against Ibom Angels. However, Ibom Angels mounted a spirited comeback through Miriam Okocha and Happiness Agboye, forcing the match into penalties after a 2-2 draw. Heartland eventually prevailed 4-2 in the shootout to book their semi-final ticket.
Former champions Sunshine Queens completed the semi-final line-up with a slim but crucial 1-0 victory over Confluence Queens. Owoseni Oluwabulola's early strike in the 11th minute proved enough to separate both sides and send the Akure club through.
The semi-finals will see FC Robo Queens battle Heartland Queens, while Sunshine Queens face Nasarawa Amazons for a place in the final.
The champions of the 2026 Women’s President Federation Cup will be crowned on July 11, when the final takes place at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, alongside the men’s final.
