Morocco make Futsal history with fourth consecutive AFCON crown

Morocco have cemented their dominance of African futsal after defeating Angola 5-2 in the final of the 2026 TotalEnergies CAF Futsal Africa Cup of Nations to secure a record-extending fourth consecutive continental title.

The hosts sealed the championship on Wednesday, October 21, in Rabat, extending their remarkable run and becoming the first nation to win four successive editions of the competition.

The triumph further strengthened Morocco’s position as Africa’s leading futsal nation under head coach Hicham Dguig, whose team continued the winning tradition established by their previous championship successes.

Morocco had entered the final as defending champions after winning the 2016, 2020 and 2024 editions. Their latest success takes them clear of Egypt in the record for consecutive titles, with the North Africans having won the tournament’s first three editions in 1996, 2000 and 2004.

Angola, runners-up in 2024, entered the final hoping to claim their first-ever Futsal AFCON crown, but Morocco’s attacking quality and experience proved decisive in front of the home supporters.

The opening stages were closely contested, with Angola holding the hosts at bay for much of the first half before Othmane El Idrissi broke the deadlock in the 17th minute.

Angola responded almost immediately, equalising in the 18th minute to become the first team to score against Morocco in the tournament.

The hosts restored their advantage a minute later through Youssef Jaouad, whose finish put Morocco ahead 2-1 as the contest gathered momentum.

Morocco carried their advantage into the break before extending it early in the second half, with Idriss Raiss El-Fenni finding the net in the 21st minute.

Ismail Amazal added the fourth goal in the 33rd minute, putting the defending champions in a commanding position as Angola struggled to contain their opponents’ attacking threat.

Bilal Bakkali then scored Morocco’s fifth goal in the 35th minute, further underlining the hosts’ superiority and putting the result beyond Angola’s reach.

Angola managed to reduce the deficit with a second goal in the 37th minute, but it was not enough to prevent Morocco from completing another successful title defence.

The final was a repeat of the 2024 decider, when Morocco defeated Angola 5-1 to claim their third continental championship. Two years later, the Atlas Lions again overcame the same opponents to establish an unprecedented four-title winning streak.

Morocco’s latest achievement reflects the sustained development of futsal in the country, with the national team also making significant progress on the global stage through successive quarter-final appearances at the 2021 and 2024 FIFA Futsal World Cups.

For Angola, reaching a second consecutive final confirmed their status as one of the continent’s strongest futsal teams, even though the search for a maiden African championship will continue.

Morocco’s victory brought the 2026 tournament to a fitting conclusion on home soil, with the hosts once again demonstrating the consistency, technical quality and composure that have defined their recent continental dominance.
