NPFL hammer falls on Kwara United with 10 million Naira fine, point deductions and banishment
Kwara United have been hit with severe sanctions by the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) following multiple breaches of the league’s Framework and Rules during their Matchday 22 rearranged fixture played on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at the Kwara State Stadium, Ilorin.
The league found the Ilorin based club guilty of failing to provide adequate and effective security, a lapse that allowed unauthorized individuals to gain access to restricted areas of the stadium.
In addition, Kwara United were charged for failing to control their supporters, whose actions led to the harassment and physical assault of match officials as well as officials of Rivers United. The violent conduct resulted in bodily harm and brought the game into disrepute due to the unsporting behaviour displayed.
As punishment, the NPFL imposed a total fine of ₦10 million on the club. The breakdown includes ₦2 million for inadequate security, ₦1 million for failure to ensure proper supporter conduct, ₦2 million for assault on officials, ₦1 million for unsporting behaviour, ₦1 million for holding match officials and Rivers United officials hostage after the game, and ₦2 million as compensation for medical treatment and damages.
Another ₦1 million was added for additional security related breaches.
Beyond the financial penalties, the league also deducted three points and three goals from Kwara United’s accumulated tally for the assault on match officials.
In a further blow, the club has been ordered to play all remaining home matches at the MKO Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta, effectively moving their home ground away from Ilorin.
The NPFL also directed Kwara United to identify the supporters involved in the assaults and present evidence to facilitate their arrest and prosecution.
However, the club has been given 48 hours from the date of notification to appeal the sanctions if they wish to challenge the decision.
