Nigeria, Russia set for October friendly showdown
Nigeria’s Super Eagles will renew their rivalry with Russia when both countries meet in an international friendly at the 44,000 capacity Nizhny Novgorod Stadium on Tuesday, October 6, 2026.
The encounter has been confirmed by Nigeria’s FIFA Match Agent, Jairo Pachon of Eurodatasports, setting up the second meeting between the two nations in just 16 months.
Nigeria and Russia first crossed paths in a friendly at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium on June 6, 2025, with both sides settling for a 1-1 draw.
Russia took the lead in the first half after Nigeria defender Semi Ajayi turned the ball into his own net, but the Super Eagles fought back after the interval, with striker Tolu Arokodare restoring parity.
The forthcoming fixture will provide Nigeria with another opportunity to test themselves against strong European opposition as they continue preparations for a busy international calendar.
Although the Super Eagles failed to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, they have recorded some encouraging results in recent international engagements.
Nigeria retained the Afro-Caribbean Unity Cup in London, drew 2-2 with Poland in Warsaw and suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Portugal in Meira.
For Russia, the Nizhny Novgorod encounter will mark only their second appearance at the stadium. Their previous outing at the venue came in June 2019 when they edged Cyprus 1-0 in a UEFA Euro 2020 qualifying fixture.
The Super Eagles currently occupy 26th position in the FIFA world rankings, while Russia’s national team, popularly known as ‘Our Boys’, are ranked 35th.
The October friendly comes at a crucial point in Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualification schedule. It will be played exactly one week after the Super Eagles’ second qualifying fixture against Guinea-Bissau’s Wild Dogs in Bissau on September 29.
Nigeria are scheduled to begin their AFCON 2027 campaign four days earlier, hosting Madagascar at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo on September 25.
With three international fixtures packed into a little over a week, the Russia friendly could provide Super Eagles head coach and his technical crew with valuable competition time to assess players, fine tune tactics and build momentum ahead of the next stage of the team’s international campaign.
