Nigeria Pitch Awards: Savid News' Samuel Ahmadu wins fourth football journalist of the year award 2025
SavidNews Editor, Samuel Ahmadu has won the 2025 Nigerian Football Journalist of the Year – Online award at the Nigeria Pitch Awards, securing his fourth title in the category.
The prestigious awards ceremony was held on Tuesday at Ibis Hotel, Lagos, bringing together prominent personalities, football stakeholders, journalists and other key figures in Nigeria’s football industry.
Ahmadu polled 74 votes to defeat veteran sports journalist Kunle Solaja, who recorded 67 votes, while Niyi Busari finished third with 57 votes.
The seven-vote margin over Solaja and 17-vote advantage over Busari underlined Ahmadu’s strong showing among voters in one of the country’s most competitive sports journalism categories.
The latest honour further consolidates Ahmadu’s reputation as one of Nigeria’s prominent digital sports journalists, particularly for his extensive coverage of Nigerian football and women’s football.
Ahmadu has built a strong profile through years of reporting across domestic and international football, with his work spanning the Nigeria Football Federation, Nigeria Women Football League, CAF competitions and Nigeria’s national teams.
He currently serves as Spokesperson of the Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL), where he is responsible for strategic media communication, publicity and promotion of the women’s domestic league.
He is also the Special Assistant on Media to the Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission (FCC), Hon. Hulayat Motunrayo Omidiran, where he handles media and public communication responsibilities for the Commission.
In another major leadership responsibility, Ahmadu was recently elected Deputy Secretary General of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) at the association’s Triennial National Delegates Congress held in Kaduna.
His emergence at the Pitch Awards therefore comes at a period when he is combining journalism with significant professional and leadership responsibilities across sports administration, government communication and the media industry.
The award also adds to a growing list of recognitions for Ahmadu, whose journalism career has included extensive coverage of women’s football, the NWFL, Super Falcons, CAF competitions and major football developments in Nigeria.
His latest Pitch Awards victory highlights the growing influence of digital sports journalism in Nigeria, where online platforms have become an increasingly important source of football news, analysis and audience engagement.
Ahmadu’s 74 votes placed him ahead of Solaja and Busari in the final voting, giving him another major individual recognition in a career that has increasingly combined journalism, media management and sports administration.
