Edo Governor rewards Edo Queens 50 million Naira after CAF Champions League qualifying triumph
Edo State Governor, His Excellency Senator Monday Okpebholo, has rewarded Edo Queens with ₦50 million following the team’s impressive triumph at the just-concluded CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU B Qualifiers in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso.
The governor received the champions at the Festival Hall of the Edo State Government House in Benin City, where he praised the players, coaches and officials for their outstanding performance and for bringing honour to Edo State and Nigeria.
Okpebholo congratulated the team for overcoming their opponents and securing victory in Burkina Faso, describing their achievement as a source of pride for the state and the country.
“I want to commend you girls for your victorious outing in Burkina Faso. You have made Edo State and Nigeria proud. I congratulate us all,” the governor said.
“The reason why you went to war is for you to gain victory, and you went to war and conquered. That is why we are all celebrating you today.”
Reflecting on Edo Queens’ earlier defeat to Ghanaian opponents during the qualifying campaign, the governor described the setback as a blessing in disguise, noting that it ultimately contributed to the team’s success.
“When you played Ghana first, your chairman refused to tell you girls that I said you would beat Ghana again. If you had beaten Ghana first, they would have defeated you in the final. Your first defeat to Ghana was a blessing in disguise,” he said.
In recognition of the team’s achievement, Governor Okpebholo announced a cash reward of ₦50 million for the players and officials.
“For making Edo State proud, I’m rewarding you people with the sum of fifty million naira (₦50 million). Thank you all,” he added.
Meanwhile, Chairman of the Edo State Sports Commission, Hon. Amadin Enabulele, commended Governor Okpebholo for his unwavering support for Edo Queens, stressing that the team’s success would not have been possible without the administration’s backing.
Enabulele said preparations for the CAF Women’s Champions League final tournament must begin immediately, with the state determined to ensure the team is adequately prepared for the continental challenge.
He also appreciated the APC Chairman, Chief Jarrett Tenebe, for his support and presence throughout the team’s campaign.
The Edo Queens players, in turn, expressed their appreciation to Governor Okpebholo for the generous reward and continued support, pledging to remain committed to achieving further success on the continental stage.
