Nigeria U-18 Women's Handball team clinch IHF Africa Zone 3 title
Nigeria’s Under-18 Women’s Handball team has won the IHF Women’s Trophy Africa Zone 3 in the youth category. They defeated Côte d'Ivoire 37-30 in the final hosted in Abidjan on Thursday.
Coach John Uzor’s team showed strong signs of promise throughout the tournament. They finished the competition with a powerful display combining smart tactics, physical strength, and attacking skill.
The final match was a true test, featuring two of the best teams in the competition. Both had remained unbeaten until the final. Nigeria started quickly, taking an early lead with fast attacks and solid defending. Even when Côte d'Ivoire, supported by a lively home crowd, fought back with energy, Nigeria’s captain Omole Joy led a strong defensive effort to keep them at bay.
Nigeria improved their defence and used quick counterattacks to put pressure on the host team. Balikisu Amina set the pace for Nigeria’s attack. Despite Côte d'Ivoire's efforts to turn the game around, Nigeria kept control and managed the last few minutes well. They finished with a seven-goal lead to secure victory.
Coach Uzor praised his team for their discipline and unity. He said, "Their hard work shows in this win. They played as a team, supported each other, and proved they are champions." He also commended the Handball Federation of Nigeria, led by Samuel Ocheho, for their support in preparing the team.
With this win, Nigeria’s Under-18 team becomes the Zone 3 champions and earns a spot in the next phase of the IHF Women’s Trophy. They will represent the zone in the continental stage, which will take place at a future, unspecified location.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Under-20 Women’s Handball team finished third, earning a bronze medal. They beat Benin Republic 31-19 in the third-place match.
Coach Shittu Adewunmi Agboola’s team was unable to reach the final after losing 28-25 to Burkina Faso in the semi-final. They responded well by defeating Benin Republic to end their run in the tournament.
Burkina Faso will compete in the junior category of the IHF Women’s Trophy Africa Continental Phase. They earned their spot after winning a tense penalty shootout 5-4 against Côte d'Ivoire following a 27-27 draw in regular time.
