NFF targets coaching revolution, target CAF-A license and women B program

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has reaffirmed its commitment to raising the standard of coaching in the country, with plans underway to host a CAF A Licence course, alongside a CAF B Licence programme exclusively for women coaches next year.

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau made this known on Monday during a strategic meeting with the Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Philip Shaibu, at the federation’s secretariat.

Shaibu, a former Deputy Governor of Edo State, visited to explore areas of collaboration as part of the institute’s ambitious two-year plan to tackle Nigeria’s estimated two-million coaching deficit across sports.

Gusau emphasised that coach education remains a central pillar of the current NFF administration’s agenda.

“Since coming into office, we have taken the issue of improving our coaches very seriously,” Gusau said in a statement released by the NFF media department.

“We have organised several coaching courses, including a CAF C Licence programme for 30 women coaches. These participants will return next year for their B Licence. At the same time, we are working hard to secure CAF’s approval to host a CAF A Licence course in the near future.”

The federation has steadily expanded its coaching development initiatives in recent years. In 2024, the NFF successfully conducted a four-month CAF B Licence course for about 25 coaches, alongside a D Licence programme aimed at grassroots development.

Notably, the federation also broke new ground with a CAF C Licence course exclusively for women, the first of its kind in Nigeria. The programme, which ran in three modules between July and September 2024, brought together 30 female coaches from across the country.

With fresh plans now in motion, the NFF appears set to deepen its investment in technical development, a move that could prove crucial in bridging the coaching gap and strengthening the foundation of Nigerian football.
