Nigeria's Terence Terfa Vambe appointed to IHF arbitration tribunal
Nigeria’s Terence Terfa Vembe has been appointed as a member of the Arbitration Tribunal of the International Handball Federation (IHF), the sport’s world governing body.
According to an official letter dated April 9, 2026, and personally signed by IHF President Hassan Moustafa, the tribunal will serve for the IHF electoral cycle spanning 2025 to 2029.
The letter noted that Mr. Vembe, a trained lawyer, was selected following a decision by the IHF Council and pursuant to a resolution of the IHF Congress, which authorized the Council to make such appointments.
The Arbitration Tribunal serves as the highest appellate adjudicating body of the IHF, handling appeals arising from decisions of the Arbitration Commission. The Commission itself comprises a Chairperson and ten members elected by the IHF Congress, with representation from each continental body.
Prior to this appointment, Vembe served as Executive Director of the Commonwealth Handball Association (CHA). He is also the founder and Principal Partner of Anakerem Chambers, the Law Offices of Terfa Vembe & Co.
Earlier in his legal career, he worked with another law firm, focusing on civil and criminal litigation across Nigeria and the West African sub-region, securing several landmark judgments.
A native of Benue State, Vembe is a former international handball player who featured in Nigeria’s National Handball Premier League with the Benue Buffaloes Handball Club based in Makurdi.
Widely regarded as a grassroots sports development advocate, he was a pioneer member and Secretary of the now-defunct Rockets and Lynxes Handball Clubs in Gboko. He also served as Captain of the men’s team and Coach of both men’s and women’s teams at the University of Ibadan Handball Team.
Now a veteran of the sport, he is an active member of Mega Veterans Handball in Abuja.
Beyond his playing career, Vembe has built a strong reputation as a sports administrator. He currently serves as Legal Adviser to the Handball Federation of Nigeria (HFN) and the African Handball Veterans Association. He is also a three-term member of the Ethics and Arbitration Commission of the HFN.
