Stanley Nwabali announces return in style
Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali made a sensational return to competitive football, producing a match winning display to earn the Man of the Match award as Chippa United held Lamontville Golden Arrows to a goalless draw in their opening match of the 2026/27 Betway Premiership season.
Playing his first official game since January, the Nigerian shot stopper was the standout performer at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday, making six crucial saves to secure a valuable away point for the Chilli Boys.
Nwabali came under intense pressure in the second half as Golden Arrows dominated proceedings, but the 30 year old responded with a string of outstanding saves.
He denied Ronaldo Van Neel twice before producing a brilliant stoppage time reflex save to keep out substitute Sabelo Sithole from close range.
Four of his six saves came from inside the penalty area, highlighting his sharp reflexes, composure and commanding presence as Chippa United withstood sustained pressure from the home side.
The clean sheet marked a memorable comeback for the Super Eagles' first-choice goalkeeper, who returned to Chippa United earlier this summer after spending five months away from competitive football.
Nwabali had mutually terminated his contract with the Eastern Cape club in February before making a return ahead of the new season, bringing an end to months of uncertainty surrounding his future.
His commanding display handed head coach Brandon Truter an encouraging start to the campaign, with the experienced goalkeeper playing a decisive role in ensuring Chippa United opened the season with a hard-earned point.
The result leaves both Chippa United and Golden Arrows with a point from their opening fixture, while Nwabali's impressive return will also delight the Super Eagles coaching crew ahead of Nigeria's upcoming international engagements.
After months away from competitive action, the 30 year old demonstrated that he remains one of Africa's top goalkeepers, delivering the confidence, leadership and shot-stopping brilliance that made him one of the stars of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
