Nigeria wins three gold, two silver medals at African Boxing Championships
Team Nigeria has concluded its campaign at the 2026 African Elite Men’s and Women’s Boxing Championships in Nairobi, Kenya, with an impressive haul of three gold and two silver medals as the continental tournament reaches its final day on Thursday, October 22.
The achievement marks a remarkable turnaround for Nigeria’s 10-member boxing contingent, which endured several disappointing defeats in the early stages before staging a strong finish to secure five medals.
Ajishola Khadijat opened Nigeria’s gold medal account with a commanding 5–0 unanimous decision victory over Algeria’s Malak Noir E in the women’s 51–54kg final.
Precious Anine followed with Nigeria’s second gold medal after defeating Algeria’s Benane Djouher in the women’s 60–65kg category.
Team captain Blessing Orakwe completed Nigeria’s gold medal sweep with an emphatic first-round knockout of Kenya’s Akinyi Elizabeth in the women’s 75–80kg final.
Nigeria also secured two silver medals through Patricia Mbata and Ridwan Raheem, who narrowly missed out on gold in their respective finals.
Mbata lost a closely contested 3–2 points decision to Egypt’s Aboelfead Nabila in the women’s 70–75kg final, while Raheem suffered a similar 3–2 defeat against Angola’s Bernardo Massimino Sander in the men’s 65kg final.
Despite the two narrow losses, Nigeria’s five-medal finish represents a significant recovery after the team’s difficult start to the championship.
Cross River State head coach Mary Obo Ekpo had earlier expressed confidence that the contingent would return home with multiple medals despite its early setbacks. The team’s performance has now fulfilled that prediction.
The outcome also provides encouragement for Nigeria Boxing Federation President Adebayo Olawale Edun, Vice President Omonlei Yakubu and Head of Delegation, Capt. Rasulun Kashim.
As the championships draw to a close in Nairobi, Nigeria leaves with three continental champions, two silver medallists and renewed optimism about the future of the country’s boxing programme.
