Presidential candidate Peter Obi was at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Sunday to witness the excitement of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), as Ikorodu City FC secured a 2-0 victory over Rangers International FC.

The Former Anambra State Governor on Sunday watched the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 6 encounter between Ikorodu City and defending champions Rangers International at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos.

Obi’s presence at the Onikan stadium was announced by Ikorodu City through its social media platforms during the fixture, with the club welcoming the former governor to the Lagos venue.

The match kicked off at 4pm, with Ikorodu City hosting Rangers in one of the fixtures of the 2026/27 NPFL season.  

Rangers arrived in Lagos unbeaten in their previous four league matches, while Ikorodu City were looking to respond after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Bendel Insurance in Benin City earlier in the week.

The visit added a notable presence to a fixture involving two clubs with growing profiles in Nigerian top-flight football.

Obi has previously attended several major sporting events involving Nigerian teams, including international football matches and domestic sporting activities.

In March 2025, he travelled to Uyo to watch the Super Eagles’ 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Zimbabwe at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

That encounter ended 1-1, with Obi subsequently praising the players for their effort and sportsmanship.  

He was also in Abidjan in February 2024 for Nigeria’s Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final against Angola, where Ademola Lookman scored the only goal of the encounter to send the Super Eagles into the semi-finals.

Obi later attended the 2025 Unity Cup meeting between Nigeria and Jamaica at Brentford Stadium in London, a match Nigeria won on penalties after a 2-2 draw.

His sporting engagements have also extended beyond football. During a visit to Ibadan in April 2026, he visited the Lekan Salami Stadium, where young Nigerians participated in basketball, lawn tennis, handball and judo activities.  

His appearance at the Ikorodu City-Rangers fixture therefore adds an NPFL match to his recent attendance at sporting events involving Nigerian athletes and teams.

The Matchday 6 encounter also formed part of an increasingly competitive opening phase of the 2026/27 NPFL season, with Rangers seeking to maintain their strong start and Ikorodu City looking to collect points on home territory.

 Ikorodu City took an early lead through Aderemi Adeoye in the eighth minute before Ikechukwu Junior doubled the advantage in the 63rd minute.

 The result was among several Match Day 6 fixtures played across the league.
