Paul Onuachu, Chibuike Nwaiwu fire Trabzonspor past Galatasaray in title race thriller
Super Eagles stars Paul Onuachu and Chibuike Nwaiwu were on the scoresheet, while veteran Anthony Nwakaeme pulled the strings, as Trabzonspor claimed a vital 3–1 victory over Galatasaray on Saturday to close within one point of the league summit.
Riding a six-game winning streak, Trabzonspor approached the clash with momentum but faced a Galatasaray side looking to respond after their UEFA Champions League exit to Liverpool. The visitors were, however, without key man Victor Osimhen, sidelined with an arm injury.
The hosts wasted no time asserting themselves. Just three minutes in, Wagner Pina delivered a pinpoint cross from the right, and Onuachu rose highest to power home a clinical header, handing Trabzonspor an early lead.
Galatasaray fought their way back into the contest and found an equaliser shortly after the restart through Wilfried Singo, setting up a tense second half.
But Trabzonspor responded with intent. In the 62nd minute, Nwakaeme’s expertly delivered free-kick found Nwaiwu, who guided a composed header into the net to restore the advantage.
From there, the hosts showed defensive resolve to keep Galatasaray at bay and secure all three points in a fiercely contested encounter.
The victory tightens the title race significantly, with Galatasaray still top on 64 points with a game in hand, Trabzonspor now just behind on 63, and Fenerbahce in close pursuit on 60.
Onuachu’s opener takes his league tally to an impressive 22 goals this season, further cementing his place as the division’s leading scorer, while Nwaiwu fresh from his Super Eagles debut during the March international break continues his rise with his third goal of the campaign.
