Rangers edge Sobemap on penalties to reach CAF Champions League second round
Nigeria champions Rangers International FC have secured a place in the second preliminary round of the 2026/27 CAF Champions League after defeating Benin Republic side Sobemap 5-4 on penalties in the return leg of their first-round tie in Lomé, Togo, on Friday.
The tie went to a shootout after both teams played out another 1-1 draw in the second leg, following the same scoreline in the first meeting at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, Ogun State, last Sunday.
Rangers took the lead in the 21st minute of the return fixture, but Sobemap fought back to restore parity in the second half, forcing the tie to be decided from the penalty spot.
Fidelis Ilechukwu’s side held their nerve in the shootout, winning 5-4 to complete victory and book their place in the second preliminary round.
The Flying Antelopes will now turn their attention to the next stage of their continental campaign as they continue their quest for Champions League success.
